Volunteers are invited to join a community effort to protect local waterways during the Tag a Storm Drain event on Saturday, April 12, beginning at 10 a.m.

The event is a collaboration between Main Street Elizabethton, the Elizabethton MS4 Stormwater Quality Program, and Keep Carter County Beautiful. Participants will install “Drains to Stream” decals on 39 storm drain inlets along East Elk Avenue and part of East F Street.

Volunteers will meet in the parking lot across from J’s Corner and work in four teams. Each team will be provided with the tools needed to complete the task, which is expected to take no longer than three hours.

The project route begins on East F Street at J’s Corner and continues east through downtown along East Elk Avenue to Highway 19E.

Steps for applying the decals include scraping the pavement with a metal brush, heating the marker location, applying rubber adhesive, heating it to activate the bond, placing the marker, and stepping on it for about 30 seconds to secure it.

The project is part of an ongoing effort to raise awareness of the connection between storm drains and local streams.
