On Tuesday evening at Citizens Bank Stadium, the Elizabethton Cyclones boys soccer team was shut down by David Crockett, who scored a 4-nil victory. The Cyclones were stymied the entire match by a physical, quick Pioneers squad who allowed just two shots on goal, with neither shot being particularly dangerous.

“It seems like they play to be the hero, and be the highlight, and because of that we get none,” Cyclones head coach Doug Schulz said. “We have a lot of talent, but it hasn’t meshed. We will watch film and see what we can correct.”

All-East Tennessee standout Diego Silva got the Pioneers on the scoreboard with a goal in the 26th minute, taking a pass from Carlos Prado just outside the penalty area and firing a shot past EHS goalkeeper Tucker Taylor at waist height.

In the 31st minute, the Pioneers struck again on a goal from Deter Thompson for a 2-nil Crockett halftime advantage.

“One thing I have preached throughout this season is for guys to ask for the ball,” Schulz said. “All I ask for is discipline — not talent. Our best game was the first one we played, and not because our opponent was weak. We can do a whole lot better.”

In the 45th minute, Prado scored on a breakaway and fired a shot low and to Taylor’s right. It was Prado once again in the 56th minute, scoring on a pass from Gunner Corbit for the final score of the match.

The Cyclones were limited to two shots on goal and never really got an offensive attack going, as it was one pass and then a turnover for the most part of the match. Drake Teague had a shot on goal in the first half that was handled easily by Pioneer goalkeeper Bradley Gouge, and Reece Vernon’s free kick from 40 yards out was caught by Gouge in a leaping save.

When asked what his team could do to improve, Teague said, “We need more consistency and better passes. Our form has been poor the last few games, and we need to improve that.”
