The Carter County Sheriff’s Office is warning area businesses about an ongoing counterfeit money scheme and is asking for the public’s help in identifying those involved.
Over the past few months, multiple businesses in Carter County — particularly in the Roan Mountain and Hampton areas — have reported falling victim to a scam involving counterfeit bills.
According to investigators, a suspect enters a business and makes a small purchase, typically under $5, using a fake $50 or $100 bill. In some cases, the suspect has also asked employees to break another large bill. In one reported incident, the same suspect allegedly changed clothes after completing the scam, then re-entered the store to attempt it again.
Security footage has shown at least two individuals involved, both seen driving what appears to be an early 2000s Volkswagen Touareg that is either white or silver.
Similar incidents have also been reported in neighboring areas of North Carolina.
Local businesses are urged to be cautious when accepting large bills for small purchases and to examine suspicious-looking currency closely. Authorities also suggest limiting the acceptance of large bills during certain transactions.
Anyone who believes their business has been affected is asked to contact the Carter County Sheriff’s Office at 423-542-1896. Tips about the suspects can be submitted by phone or online at www.sheriff.cc/home/contact-us/crime-tip.
