To the Editor:
I am writing as a concerned resident to highlight a pressing safety issue on West G Street, particularly between Burgie Street and Kiwanis Park, extending past West Side Church. Despite the existing speed limit of 30 mph and clear signage indicating “Slow Children Playing,” excessive speeding remains unchecked, creating significant risks to pedestrians, park visitors and students at West Side Elementary School.
Over a year ago, I raised these concerns with Chief Shaw, who explained that limited manpower prevented active speed enforcement in the area. While I understand the challenges of resource allocation, I suggested placing a squad car as a deterrent. However, no noticeable action has followed, as priorities have seemingly focused elsewhere, leaving this critical safety issue unresolved.
Given the proximity of Kiwanis Park and West Side Elementary to West G Street, the likelihood of a tragedy increases daily. To mitigate this danger, I propose reinstating the traffic light that once existed at the intersection near the West Side Fire Hall and State Farm building. If budget constraints arise, even a flashing yellow light could remind drivers to reduce speed. A fatality caused by speeding would undoubtedly cost more, both financially and emotionally, than investing in traffic control measures.
If these concerns are not addressed, I reluctantly suggest raising the posted speed limit from 30 mph to reflect the average speed of 45 mph, since enforcement appears unlikely. While this is far from ideal, it should at least acknowledge the reality of the situation.
I urge city officials and community leaders to prioritize the safety of our residents, especially children, by taking meaningful action. As someone raised in West End, I am deeply invested in the well-being of this community and hope these suggestions do not fall on deaf ears.
Sincerely,
S. Shepherd
