County wrap-up: Lady Rangers handle Warriors in doubleheader, 13-4, 6-4

The Lady Rangers banged out 12 hits as they scored in each inning to take care of the Lady Warriors in a county clash Monday night. Mollie Buckles got the Lady Rangers on the board in the first inning as she hit a single to left, scoring Katlyn Dugger.

Unaka exploded in the second inning, scoring five runs off three hits. Warriors pitcher Trinity Bowers got Dugger to hit into a fielder’s choice to score a run, then the Lady Rangers picked up another run off a Warriors error. Kacie Bare hit a single past short to pick up two more runs, and the Lady Rangers took advantage of another Warriors error at second to push the score out to 6-0.

With two outs, the Lady Warriors got on the board with a double off the bat of Bowers. She scored when Natalie Cline reached on an error at short. K. Bare got out of the inning when Maliyah Green popped out to second.

The Lady Rangers answered right back with three more runs as back-to-back singles by Dugger and K. Story, followed by a walk by Mollie Buckles, loaded the bases. Dugger scored on a slow grounder to second, then Brooklyn Campbell hit a ball in the gap to right to knock home two more runs and make it 9-1.

The Warriors got another run in the top of the fourth as Cadelynn Taylor laid down a textbook bunt to plate Ashton Bates, but the Rangers got out of the inning when Addie Holt was caught trying to steal third. The Lady Rangers once again had an answer as singles by Dugger and Buckles plated three more runs to stretch the lead to 13-2.

The Warriors kept battling as Kiera Reece hit a line-drive single to right, and Miley Miller doubled on a deep fly ball to center. She later scored on a grounder to third to make it 13-4, but the Lady Warriors could get no closer.

Dugger picked up three hits and three RBIs for the Lady Rangers, while Buckles, Campbell and Devalynn Harter also added two hits each. K. Bare got the win on the mound for the Rangers, pitching five innings and surrendering just two earned runs while picking up four strikeouts.

Game 2

Kimberly Proffitt picked up 10 strikeouts and gave up two earned runs as the Lady Rangers held off the Warriors, who brought the tying run to the plate before Proffitt ended the game with a strikeout.

Buckles and Bare both had two hits for the Rangers, while Miley Miller got a base hit and picked up two RBIs for the Lady Warriors. Natalie Cline, M. Greene and N. Williams also picked up hits for the Lady Warriors.

 

Pigeon Forge, Ripken Experience – Elizabethton 10, Stowe Monroe (Ohio) 7
The Lady Cyclones rallied late in the game to improve to 9-2 on the season. They posted four runs in the sixth inning to notch the win. The offense was sparked by Kaitlyn Gryder, who collected three hits in the contest. Sadie Williams added two hits, including an important triple in the sixth. Lily McDuffie also picked up a couple of hits.

Ezzy Barr got the win on the mound for the Cyclones, going four innings and giving up no earned runs while striking out seven.

 

Baseball

South Greene 5, Happy Valley 3
The Warriors outhit the Rebels 7-3 but it wasn’t enough, as South Greene picked up two runs off two singles, a walk and an error to break a 3-all tie in the bottom of the sixth. They then sent the Warriors down in order in the seventh to hold on.

Ty Johnson pitched 4.1 innings in relief for the Warriors, giving up just two earned runs off two hits. Drew Blevins led the Warriors with two hits, including a double. Mason Belt also got a base hit and an RBI for Happy Valley. The Rebels look to get even Tuesday as they host the Warriors.

Elizabethton 10, David Crockett 9
After a comeback win Friday against West Ridge, the “Comeback Kids” did it once again Monday night. The teams went back and forth, but the Cyclones plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth when Aliester Sumner drew a walk, scoring Justin Whitehead.

Steven Meadows went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and JD Hooks added hits for the Cyclones. Bryson Rowland was strong on the mound. The senior gave up just two earned runs over five innings, scattering five hits. With the win, the Cyclones improved to 7-5 and have won six in a row.

North Greene 16, Cloudland 2
North Greene erupted for 10 runs in the fourth inning to push past the Highlanders. Walker Gouge, Camden Peppers and Tristen Lowery each collected a hit for Cloudland in the loss.
