The EHS boys and girls tennis teams seem to be rounding into shape after an impressive win over the Johnson County Longhorns. They will have to continue to show that improvement in a power conference that features the “Big 3” in Tennessee High, Dobyns-Bennett, and Science Hill.
The boys team posted a 7-2 team win—this after securing a 7-2 win over West Ridge—while the girls team recorded a 9-0 shutout. The boys improved to 2-1 on the season, while the girls improved to 1-2.
In boys play, Dhilon Patel, the No. 1 seed, posted an 8-6 win over Hunter Paisley, and Josh Mindemann secured an 8-3 win over Sammy Seams. In other action, Deven Patel and Aiden Cole picked up wins in singles play, while Max Frickle and Jace Bowman fell 3-8 and 4-8, respectively.
In doubles play on the boys’ side, Anderson Hallman and Hudson Smith won their No. 1-seed doubles match 8-4, while Luke Churchill and Sage Burleson claimed an 8-3 victory. The final doubles match of the day saw Cole Hartley and Joubron El Helou win 8-5.
On her boys’ team, Head Coach Leanne Click shared her expectations:
“I’m excited. We have a solid boys’ team who will be competitive in positions one through eight. Our senior boys, Anderson Hallman and Elijah Smith, have been playing for four years and have done extremely well. I expect them to have their best season yet.”
Over on the girls’ side, it was a clean sweep. No. 1 seed Zyleigh Bates posted an 8-2 win over Longhorn Marlee Townsend, and No. 2 seed Savannah Smith took an 8-1 win over Sky Feltner. Other winners in singles play included Madelyn Stanberry (8-2), Kihsley Brittan (9-8 tiebreaker), Mahala Nave (8-4), and Jasy Shell (8-0).
In doubles play, the team of Madelyn Stanberry and Lilly Hardin won 8-1, while Gracie Artz and Ashleigh Hyatt secured an 8-2 victory.
On the girls’ squad, Coach Click shared similar enthusiasm:
“Our girls’ team is young and in the building process and is led by two-year returner Zyleigh Bates.”
Bates remains undefeated this season and has already won her match against a very solid Dobyns-Bennett team.
“As a whole, our program is in a process of progress. We are looking forward to growth for each athlete and for the team as a whole.”
