Carter County man arrested in church burglary

HAMPTON – A Carter County man has been arrested in connection with the burglary of a local church.

Investigators with the Carter County Sheriff’s Office arrested Douglas Lee Shaver, 36, of Elizabethton, charging him with theft of property, burglary, and attempted burglary of a motor vehicle.

The charges stem from an investigation into a break-in at Harmony Free Will Baptist Church in Hampton during the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 18. According to the initial report, a church representative called 911 to report the burglary and provided investigators with video footage.

The footage showed a male subject driving a silver sedan pull into the church parking lot around 4:30 a.m. The suspect exited the vehicle and first attempted to enter another vehicle before prying open the door to an outside storage shed and stealing several items, including tools.

During the course of the investigation, Shaver was identified as a suspect. Deputies located him at a residence in Hampton on Thursday and took him into custody.

Shaver was transported to the Carter County Detention Center, where he remains held on a $30,000 bond.
