The Elizabethton Electric System has been notified of a scam in which callers from a private number are contacting EES customers, demanding payment for past-due bills and threatening to disconnect service if payment is not made immediately.
According to Safety and Facilities Coordinator Brandon Campbell, the electric system will never call and make a demand for payments.
“We want our customers to know this is not something that the system engages in,” said Campbell. “We just recently began a service where customers may receive a recorded call from 423-666-0053 advising of a past-due bill, but we always ask that the customers reach back out to us regarding the billing issue.”
Campbell said several calls have been made in the scam attempt, and the callers have contacted both businesses and individuals.
The system wanted to make sure customers are aware of the scam attempt and warn against providing payment information to the scammers.
