BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Milligan University softball team earned a historic doubleheader sweep on Tuesday afternoon against Bluefield University, winning both games by run-rule in dominant fashion. The victories, 15-1 in five innings and 11-2 in six innings, marked the 1,000th and 1,001st career wins for head coach Wes Holly.

In the first game, Milligan wasted no time, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the opening inning. Alexis Brown singled in Maggie Johnson, and Mia Grasse followed with a two-run double, pushing the score to 2-0. Grasse then stole home to make it 3-0. After a scoreless second, the Buffs added another run in the third when Hannah Bates singled home Grasse, making it 4-0.

The offense exploded in the fourth inning, beginning with a sacrifice fly from Grasse to score Johnson. The Buffs went on to score six more runs, including three walks with the bases loaded and two wild pitches, putting Milligan up 10-0. Milligan capped the game with four more runs in the fifth, as bases-loaded walks and RBI singles gave the Buffs a commanding 15-0 lead. The Rams managed a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the game ended with a 15-1 scoreline.

Game two followed a similar script, with Milligan taking a 1-0 lead in the first on a double steal by the Johnson sisters. In the third, the Buffs erupted for four runs, including a two-run double by Brown, to extend their lead to 5-0. Bluefield responded with a run in the third, but Milligan’s offense continued to shine, scoring three more runs in the fifth and adding two in the sixth to close out the 11-2 victory.

Ma. Johnson starred offensively, going a perfect 7-for-7 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Grasse added four RBIs and six stolen bases, while Brown drove in three runs and scored five. Milligan’s pitching was also strong, with Bree Presnell tossing a no-hitter through 4.2 innings in the first game and Sadie Shoun and Jordan Roulettwheeeler combining for the win in game two.

Coach Holly’s milestone victories propel the Buffs to a 12-4 record as they head into their next AAC doubleheader at Union Commonwealth University on Friday, March 14. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
