On Saturday afternoon, Unicoi County High School hosted the girls District 1-AA basketball tournament with the top spot on the line. In Game 1, the Hampton Lady Bulldogs – led by senior post Faye Carrico’s 16-point effort – knocked off South Greene 62-43, and in Game 2, Chuckey-Doak manhandled the Happy Valley Lady Warriors 56-20.

“You know when you play South Greene you are going to get the best version of them,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Dewayne Humphrey said. “They are a very well-coached team, and sometimes it takes a while to get our footing. Our key tonight was pressure and getting steals.”

While the Lady ‘Dogs (22-8) got off to a slow start by their measurements, the Lady Rebels (9-20) were stone cold, scoring just two first-quarter points. By the end of the first half, Hampton had built a 35-14 advantage, with Carrico scoring 10 first-half points.

“Faye was tremendous, and the kids started looking for her quite a bit,” Humphrey said. “We had 14 assists in this one, and we knew it would be a dogfight.”

Hampton added five more points to their lead, outscoring South Greene 15-10 to take a 50-24 lead into the fourth quarter. The Lady Rebels were led by Natalie Foshie with 10 points, followed by Paisley Brobeck, who added eight points.

For Hampton, Hannah Smith and Brea Hicks each scored 12 points, with Piper Helle scoring 10.
