The Tennessee State Parks are again partnering with the Garden Club of America for a nationwide single-day volunteer event on March 1. The Garden Club of America is encouraging partners to help connect the concept of healthy native habitats with increases in native wildlife that we love, like birds!
The Weed Wrangle at Sycamore Shoals State Park will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, March 1. Volunteers will help preserve the landscape at one of Tennessee’s most historic sites by assisting in removing invasive English Ivy throughout the park grounds and along the walking trail. Those participating are asked to dress appropriately for the weather and come prepared to get dirty. Please bring your own work gloves and drinking water.
Participants are asked to report to Ranger Taylor Morefield in the picnic area adjacent to the park visitor center for instruction.
Minors must be accompanied by an adult. No pets, please.
At Roan Mountain State Park, from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Visitor Center, volunteers and park ranger staff will work together to remove non-native Chinese Privet from along the shores of the Doe River and prepare the area for planting of native plants to outcompete the privet.
This workday will start and end at the Visitor Center parking lot, where restrooms will be close by at all times. Volunteers will be given park tools and safety gear (gloves and eye protection) but are asked to bring water bottles and any snacks/medicine needed for a three-hour work event.
Weed Wrangle is part of the Garden Club of America’s national stewardship effort to remove invasive plants from public spaces. Parks across the state will be hosting events that will not only be great opportunities for volunteers to get outside and help restore their native natural beauty, but also provide the knowledge and skill to combat these non-native invaders at your own home.
Weed Wrangle is a one-day, area-wide volunteer effort to help rescue our public parks and green spaces from non-native invasive species through hands-on removal of especially harmful trees, vines, and flowering plants. Supervised by an expert in invasive weed management, Weed Wrangle volunteers learn, practice, and begin a habit of maintaining an area free of non-native invasive plants and encourage replanting with natives in removal areas. By engaging our neighbors and challenging them to take action in their own spaces, we hope to create a movement that will have the greatest impact on invasive plants.
