The City of Elizabethton, in partnership with Main Street Elizabethton, has selected Joseph Maye of Hexagoat Art as the artist to complete the newest mural project for downtown Elizabethton.
Hexagoat Art will paint a vintage-style postcard mural on panels that will be mounted to Eagle Center Antiques’ side brick wall.
Eagle Center Antiques, located at 507 E. Elk Ave. in downtown Elizabethton, is a local business featuring 40-plus vendors with antiques, vintage treasures, art and more.
This active business sits at the intersection of E. Elk Avenue and Armed Forces Drive in the middle of the downtown district, serving as a great location to showcase public art.
This project is funded by the Tennessee Arts Commission Rural Arts Project Grant awarded to the city in partnership with Main Street Elizabethton.
The mural artwork will portray local cultural, physical and symbolic references, paying homage to Elizabethton. This project is rooted in themes of friendliness and hometown pride, which cover two of the four themes that drive Main Street Elizabethton projects and initiatives.
Previous public art project Tracks of the Wild by Ernesto Maranje is rooted in nature, and the History in the Making community mural by Caitlin Maupin is rooted in heritage. Main Street utilizes these four themes (friendliness, hometown pride, nature, heritage) to determine public art projects that elevate the downtown district.
Main Street is asking for community feedback to determine what the postcard mural should highlight. The public is asked to participate in a survey to vote on their top choices of cultural, physical and symbolic references paying homage to Elizabethton.
The top choices will be displayed in the mural artwork from Hexagoat Art. The survey is open until Friday, Feb. 28, on the Downtown Elizabethton Facebook and Instagram, as well as in printed versions available at the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library.
The mural project is expected to be installed and dedicated in late spring. Main Street Elizabethton and the City of Elizabethton will announce details on their social media profiles for all to come out and celebrate downtown’s newest public art project.
