Johnson County junior Darren Chappell reached a significant milestone in his basketball career, scoring his 1,000th career point in a game against Chilhowie, Virginia. The standout Longhorn received recognition for his achievement when Coach Austin Atwood presented him with the game ball during their matchup against Unaka a few nights later.

Coach Atwood spoke highly of Chappell’s progression as a player over the years. “Darren Chappell—the best thing about him—he can score at all three levels. When he came in as a freshman, we really thought he was just going to be a role player, but he really worked at it his first couple of years and became a good player. He still has a ways to go, but in our league, when he is playing well, he is as good as anybody in the league.”

Chappell has been a dominant force for the Longhorns this season, averaging 21 points and seven rebounds per game. His ability to score efficiently from anywhere on the court has made him a crucial asset for Johnson County.

Cloudland Coach Cody McClain, who coached Chappell at the junior varsity level, also had high praise for the young star. “He is one of my favorite players I have ever coached. He is a hard worker, a great kid, and he deserves a chance to play at the next level.”

With the regular season behind them, Johnson County is now focused on the postseason as they prepare to open tournament play this week in Unicoi. As Chappell continues to shine, the Longhorns will be looking to make a deep run in the tournament, with their junior standout leading the charge.
