Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Basketball is a fantastic sport for young children, offering a fun way to develop physical skills, teamwork and confidence. For kids ages 5 to 7, focusing on the basics and making the game enjoyable is key to fostering a lifelong love for the sport.

Imagine a group of eager 5- to 7-year-olds, their faces lighting up as they step onto the basketball court. The primary goal here is to make basketball enjoyable. Coaches use practice, small-sided games and full-court games to keep the kids engaged and excited about playing. Three-on-three games (half-court) and four-on-four games (full-court) are just a couple of ways we apply the skills being taught.

In this supportive environment, effort is celebrated just as much as success. Positive reinforcement builds confidence and motivates children to keep improving. Success is based on effort, enthusiasm and teamwork. Team numbers are kept low, and players get equal playing time to ensure everyone gets a chance to develop and use the skills they have learned.

At this age, children begin to learn to dribble, pass, basic footwork and shooting fundamentals. Proper technique is encouraged. Regulation-size basketballs for this age group (size 27.5) and lower goal heights (8 feet) are used to help learn these basic fundamentals. Defensive skills such as guarding the basketball and rebounding are also taught.

Introducing basketball to 5- to 7-year-olds is all about laying a solid foundation of fundamental skills while ensuring the experience is fun and positive. By focusing on basic techniques and fostering a love for the game, coaches and parents help young children develop both their basketball abilities and their overall physical and social skills. The goal is to create a supportive and enjoyable environment where kids can thrive and grow.

These skills are reinforced at the Boys & Girls Club of Elizabethton/Carter County, where dedicated coaches and volunteers work tirelessly to provide a nurturing and engaging atmosphere. The club’s programs are designed to instill a love for basketball while promoting physical fitness, teamwork and personal growth. By participating in these activities, children not only improve their basketball skills but also build lasting friendships and develop the confidence to keep participating for years to come.
