Johnson City – With temperatures expected to drop to at or below freezing in the area, The Salvation Army in Johnson City has activated White Flag conditions and will open its doors for registration and entry at 6 p.m. This season The Salvation Army has provided 770 nights of stay so far.
White Flag conditions are those in which the temperatures are expected to be 35°F or below for the night. This special protocol allows our shelter to extend its normal capacity, offering a safe, warm environment for those in need. In January, The Salvation Army’s Center of Hope opened White Flag 27 of 31 nights, providing 454 nights of stay in that month alone.
White Flag conditions are initiated when temperatures are forecast to fall to or near freezing levels or other severe weather conditions occur.
“We are expecting another cold streak. Last night, we were able to provide 12 individuals a safe and warm place to sleep and escape the weather,” corps officer Maj. Maureen Diffley said. “We hope that anyone in need will take advantage of the opportunity. Our goal is to ensure that anyone in need of shelter has a place to stay at this especially dangerous cold time. Our goal is to save lives and demonstrate the compassion of Christ by providing refuge to the most vulnerable in our community.”
The Salvation Army will be conducting check-in from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. this evening at 200 Ashe Street. Up to 25 inclement weather guests will be able to stay the night at The Salvation Army. Community partners are on standby to accept overflow should there be additional need. The S.A.M.E. Project will provide transportation to individuals who may need transportation after registration at The Salvation Army to overflow White Flag locations through the winter season.
Donations for the additional costs associated with White Flag, especially laundry services, are greatly appreciated.
The Salvation Army is happy to train and background check volunteers to assist with preparing the space and supporting the staff in the evenings and converting back to regular cafeteria space in the mornings. Volunteers train for evening shifts (4:30–9 p.m.) and morning shifts (6–9 a.m.). Shorter shifts are available.
