Johnny Delbert Hicks, 71, of Roan Mountain, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born September 8, 1953, in Wise, Virginia, to the late Harold and Gertrude Hampton Hicks. He had lived in Carter County most of his life. He was retired from the Carter County School System as a bus driver. He was also a farmer. He was of the Free Will Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Georgia Brown, Donna McKinney, and Judy Davis.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Melba McKinney Hicks; two daughters, Khristina Cardwell and husband James, and Jessica Hicks and her fiancé, Terry Snyder; three grandchildren, Lora Cardwell, Matthew Jarrett, and Samuel Jarrett; six sisters, Vickie Thompson, Shelia Hicks, Bobbie Hicks, Peggy Barlow and husband Glenn, Sue Stevens and husband Ronald, and Patsy Ferguson and husband Mike; two brothers, David Hicks and wife Teresa, and Rick Hicks and wife Sue; several nieces and nephews; and his four-legged furry friends, “Gladys” and “Roman.”
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, February 14, 2025, in Knight Cemetery, Hampton Creek Road, Roan Mountain, with Pastor Brandon Young officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Friends may also visit with the family at the residence. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 1:45 p.m. Friday.
