A Carter County man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he discharged a firearm, striking an occupied garage.

Douglas Allen Gibson, 43, of Elizabethton, was arrested Thursday by Carter County Sheriff’s Office deputies and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of felony reckless endangerment, and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

Deputies responded to a home on Sims Hill Road on Feb. 6 after a 911 caller reported an armed subject shooting into a garage. The caller provided a description of the suspect, and when officers arrived, they detained a man matching that description. Officers identified the man as Gibson.

Gibson told deputies he had been shooting at a target in the opposite direction of the garage and believed a shot may have ricocheted. However, the 911 caller told officers he and his girlfriend were inside the garage when they heard gunshots. As the man walked outside, he said a bullet came through the garage. The man stated that when he stepped outside, he saw Gibson holding a pistol and heard him make a threatening comment about his girlfriend before calling 911.

During the investigation, deputies discovered a bullet hole in the garage door and another in the window of a truck parked on the property.

Gibson told officers he had placed the firearm inside a tent. Deputies searched the tent and located a handgun and a rifle. A background check revealed Gibson had a prior felony conviction.

Gibson was arrested and transported to the Carter County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond pending arraignment.
