The J. Louie Greene Scholarship Committee recently had one of its initial meetings to announce the establishment of the J. Louie Greene Scholarship Fund with an initial investment of $250,000, donated by Louie Greene. The fund is intended to help graduating high school students at Happy Valley navigate the “what’s next” phase after high school.

The purpose of the J. Louie Greene Scholarship Committee is not only to provide financial assistance but also to offer mentoring and advice and to help students secure a more stable future through education and vocational training. The fund will be targeted to students attending Northeast State and the Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT).

The committee hopes to model the generosity of its founder, Louie Greene, who has spent his life giving back to Carter County and mentoring others. Greene graduated from Happy Valley High School in 1966 after attending 11 years at Happy Valley Schools. He credits his former teachers and classmates at Happy Valley for investing in him. Greene grew up on Gap Creek, where his family had a farm. After graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force, spending a year in Vietnam and 18 years in the National Guard. He later served his community as a loan officer at Citizens Bank for 17 years. Reflecting on his life, Greene expresses gratitude to his family for instilling in him a strong work ethic, as well as to God and his country.

“America and God have been good to me. I have been fortunate and blessed in life. I have some extra money, and I wanted to help my brothers and sisters – help them in the beginning so they can go on and do great things for our county, state, and country by learning a good skill and being prosperous,” Greene said.

The committee will be composed of community leaders, administrators, and educators. Members include Jennifer Ellis, Happy Valley High School counselor; Terry Hubbard, Carter County Schools chairman of the board; Paul Bellamy, local businessman; Dale Fair, local leader and former Citizens Bank co-worker; Danny Ward, Carter County School Board member; and Kelly Crain, local businessman and retired Carter County School Board member.

In speaking with Greene, it became evident that his time at Happy Valley meant a great deal to him. In an era when transferring schools is not only easy but often encouraged, and “being true to your school” seems like an outdated idea, Greene’s loyalty is both refreshing and inspirational.

The scholarship fund will also be set up so others may contribute and assist Happy Valley students. Those interested in donating may contact Amanda Scalf at Happy Valley High School at (423) 547-4000.
