Isbell’s commitment to clinical practice and research is evident in her work with ETSU Pediatrics’ Baby Steps Clinic, where she supports young children with prenatal substance exposure. Her research focuses on critical issues in early childhood development, including sensory integration, fine motor development, autism spectrum disorder, prenatal substance exposure and inclusive early childhood environments.

An accomplished author and speaker, Isbell has delivered numerous presentations at national and international early childhood conferences. Her publications include influential works such as “Sensory Integration: A Guide for Preschool Teachers” and “Mighty Fine Motor Fun,” providing educators and caregivers with practical strategies to support young children.

“The Clemmer College of Education and Human Development is honored to have Dr. Christy Isbell as the next director of the Center of Excellence in Early Childhood Learning and Development,” said Dr. Janna Scarborough, dean of Clemmer. “She is a leading voice in pediatric occupational therapy and early childhood development with a strong commitment to collaboration. Her work and partnerships will continue to drive impactful research and best practices in serving children from birth to eight, families and the systems that support them.”

As director, Isbell will lead the Center of Excellence in advancing its mission to improve early childhood education and care through research, advocacy and community engagement. She brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to this new role and is poised to make a significant impact on the lives of children and families in the Appalachian region and beyond.

ETSU offers robust educational programs that prepare students for diverse careers, and ETSU alumna Missy Testerman, a graduate of Clemmer, won National Teacher of the Year in 2024.
