Harold Dean Markland, 77, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, at his home. Harold was born in Elizabethton on June 8, 1947, to the late J.N. Markland and Amanda Grindstaff Markland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Markland.
Although Harold was born in Elizabethton, he lived in Athens, Tennessee, for 36 years. He retired from Tri-State Containers as a machine operator and loved hunting and fishing. Harold enjoyed all things outdoors and also loved to cook. He was an avid Tennessee Vols fan and supported all Tennessee sports and NASCAR racing.
Those left to cherish and remember Harold include his beloved wife of 36 years, Johnnie Markland; his daughter, Wendy (Wayne) Sams of Elizabethton; one grandson, Josh (Brooke) Sams of Elizabethton; and one great-granddaughter, Emma Sams. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate and honor Harold’s life will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Reverend Jamie Ferguson officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel prior to the service.
The graveside service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Josh Sams, Doug Stevens, Danny Ward, Doyce Sheffield, Mike Pritchard, and George Gwinn Jr.
A special thank you to Amedysis Hospice nurses Autumn Kyte and Nora; his interpreter and friend, Beth Arwood; Tennessee Cancer Specialists; members of Middle Tennessee Deaf Camp; and his best friend, Harold Hammock.
