MORRISTOWN — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Morristown, Tenn., has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for portions of East Tennessee, southwest Virginia, and southwest North Carolina, highlighting a series of winter weather impacts over the coming days.
Snow Showers and Accumulations
Scattered snow showers are expected today, particularly in the mountains of Virginia, northeast Tennessee, and the Smoky Mountains. Elevations above 2,500 to 3,000 feet could see light snowfall accumulation, with mountain peaks potentially receiving up to 3 inches of snow. Gusty winds reaching 35 mph in higher elevations will push wind chill temperatures into the teens during the day and down to single digits or slightly below zero overnight.
Wintry Mix on Sunday
Precipitation is forecast to return on Sunday, beginning as a wintry mix in some areas. A brief period of snow and freezing rain is possible before temperatures rise, transitioning precipitation to rain. The Cumberland Plateau and parts of southwest Virginia could see light ice accumulations during this period.
High Winds Sunday Night into Monday
Strong, gusty winds are expected in the East Tennessee mountains Sunday night and into Monday. Gusts may reach up to 60 mph, posing potential risks for downed trees and power lines.
Residents in affected areas are urged to stay updated on the latest forecasts and prepare for hazardous travel conditions, particularly in higher elevations and regions susceptible to ice accumulations.
