Ballad Health has noted a sharp increase in cases of influenza in its facilities across the region. While most infections from influenza will recover without hospital admission, influenza can sometimes cause serious illness, especially for people with underlying health conditions or are pregnant.

The best way to protect yourself from the flu is to receive your annual flu vaccine. While the vaccine is not 100% effective, it lowers the chances of severe complications from the flu. The flu vaccine is available for everyone six months and older. It’s never too late to get vaccinated – ask your primary care physician or pharmacist about getting a flu vaccine.

Those who experience symptoms of influenza should stay home to avoid spreading the virus to other people. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing, using the restroom and before eating or preparing food.
