It was only the third win of the season for the Hurricanes, who entered Tuesday’s game at John Treadway Gym with a 2-9 record against stiff competition.

The game tipped off with a high-scoring first quarter, as the Cyclones held a slim one-point advantage at the first horn, 23-22.

Both teams came out with a defensive mindset in the second quarter, but the Cyclones again edged out the visitors, 14-13, to take a 37-35 lead into halftime.

Andrew Barnett led the Cyclones in the first half with 11 points, including three treys. Quick-handed point guard Hudson Pate contributed eight points in the half.

Hudson Smith provided quality minutes off the bench for Coach Lucas Honeycutt, adding four tough points on the inside and blocking a couple of shots on defense.

Cory Carpenter couldn’t be slowed down for Morristown East, tallying 13 points in the opening half. Jaxson Archer chipped in six for the Hurricanes.

A slightly sluggish offensive output by the Cyclones in the third quarter allowed the Hurricanes to battle back and take a 48-46 lead heading into the final period of regulation.

The Cyclones managed to fight back and force a 60-60 tie as the fourth quarter ended.

In the four-minute overtime session, the Hurricanes did just enough to sneak away with the win.

Carpenter led Morristown East with 23 points. Archer added 17, while Isaac Greene and Parker Dale chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Pate had a game-high 24 points to pace the Cyclones, while Barnett finished with 15.

Other Cyclone scorers included Evan Chambers (8), Jackson Buckles (8), Smith (4), Nathan Bailey (3), and Justin Whitehead (3).
