Jackie Dean Peters, 85, Jonesborough, died December 14, 2024, in Lexington, Ky. Jackie was a native of Carter County and the youngest of the 12 children of Dan S. and Frona Elizabeth Ritchie Peters.

Jackie was a graduate of Lane Hill School, Unaka High School, and East Tennessee State University. He was a longtime employee of Great Lakes Carbon, United Data Services, and Sprint, where he worked as a computer programmer/analyst. Since the death of his wife, Dawn Trivette Peters, two years ago, he divided his time between his children in Knoxville and Lexington. Jackie and Dawn were married for 60 years, and they enjoyed many hobbies together, including genealogy, gardening, and traveling; as Jackie put it, they liked to “keep the roads hot.” Together they were the authors of the book Images of America: Carter County. They took special pride in their local history knowledge and loved to share it with other people looking for their roots in the area.

In addition to his wife and parents, Jackie was preceded in death by four brothers, Carl, R.C., Glen and Leonard Peters, and seven sisters, Beryl Blevins, Irene Laws Knode, Bernice Cole, Helen Holtsinger and Nell, Blanch and Aline Peters.

He is survived by his children, Danny (Karen) Peters, Lexington, Ky., and Deanne (Brad) Dale, Knoxville; two granddaughters, Rebecca and Lauren Peters, Lexington; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

In accordance with Jackie’s wishes, no funeral service will be held, but there will be a graveside service for Jackie and Dawn at Ritchie Cemetery to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Watauga Historical Association, P.O. Box 1776, Elizabethton, TN 37644, or Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site, 2620 South Roane Street, Johnson City, TN 37601.
