The Boys & Girls Club of Elizabethton/Carter County (BGCECC) is experiencing significant growth in its Fine Arts program, thanks to Hayley Ramsey. As the Arts & Membership Coordinator at BGCECC, Hayley is approaching her fourth year with the organization. Hayley has a bachelor’s degree in Theatre from Roanoke College in VA and a passion for the arts. She has successfully integrated her experience in choir, music, and theater into the programs offered to club members.

The initiative began with organizing a choir for the first Christmas Tree Lighting, which quickly gained momentum and became an annual event. Club members expressed a desire to expand their activities, leading to spring and summer showcases in addition to the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting. Recognizing the members’ interest in another facet of the arts, Hayley introduced a Drama Club, which was met with enthusiasm. Starting with acting exercises and character work, club members evolved into performing small skits for their families at the first Variety Show this past summer. “I believe a combination of performing and visual arts here at BGCECC is beneficial to the youth we serve every day because it gives them a voice and allows them to be heard,” said Hayley.

In addition to expanding its performing arts program, BGCECC has also grown its Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program, enabling Hayley to become a Certified Art Therapy Practitioner. Through the expanded SEL program, she has been able to provide social emotional learning through visual arts to club members. “It has been remarkable to see how members express their emotions and feelings through these art activities,” stated Hayley. Engaging in the arts, such as music, drama, and visual arts, can be particularly beneficial. These activities foster creativity, improve self-expression, and build confidence. Additionally, participating in the arts helps children develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while also offering a constructive outlet for their emotions.
