“I felt pretty good tonight,” Smith said. “They made it a battle in the fourth quarter, and we had to battle back. We had to give back what they gave us.”

Hampton (8-2, 1-0 conference) took an 18-9 first-quarter lead, forcing C-D into 4-for-9 (44.4 percent) shooting, while the Lady Bulldogs were 5-for-10 (50 percent) from the floor.

The Lady ‘Dogs continued the defensive pressure, taking a 29-13 halftime advantage, allowing just one field goal for C-D and surrendering just four points in the stanza.

“We knew it would be a physical game,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Dewayne Humphrey said. “They have big posts, and we had to box out every time the ball went up. Hannah felt hot early, and she helped close out the game with a big run in the fourth quarter. Hannah is a gym rat; she is always in here shooting and making her game better.”

The Lady Knights came into the fourth quarter trailing 41-29 but went on an eight-point run to open the period, making it a 41-37 contest. Faye Carrico stopped the bleeding with a deuce, followed by buckets from Allie Birchfield and three consecutive buckets from Smith to push the ‘Dogs’ advantage to 51-37. C-D never regained momentum.

Senior guard Piper Helle scored 10 points for Hampton, while Kennedy Brown had a team-high 13 points for the Lady Knights.

BOYS
Hampton 81-43

This one was never in doubt as the Bulldogs raced to a 49-27 halftime lead and were never threatened. Chase Davenport opened the game with a three-ball, and Hampton (8-2, 1-0 conference) took a 23-15 first-quarter advantage.

Davenport and Bryce Fagan each had 16 points to lead the Bulldogs’ scoring chart, with Tuff Robinson adding 15. Post player Jayden Nave contributed 11 points and nine rebounds.

“We came out ready to go,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “We played good defense and moved the ball well. Chase got hot there in the first quarter, and that gave us a lift. Jayden was good on the boards with nine rebounds, and we had 25 assists as a team.”

Gavin Crum led the way for the Black Knights with 12 points, while Dominique Atchison added 11 and Grant Bishop scored 10 off the bench.
