Chimney fire destroys Johnson City home; two firefighters injured

JOHNSON CITY – A chimney fire destroyed a home on Shadybrook Drive Saturday afternoon, leaving two residents unharmed but displacing them from their home.

The Johnson City Fire Department (JCFD) responded to the call at 12:55 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames on the second floor of the residence. Crews launched an aggressive attack on the fire, which had spread to the attic and roof.

A total of five JCFD engines and two trucks were deployed to the scene. The fire was brought under control by 2:47 p.m., but the house was deemed a total loss.

Fortunately, working smoke alarms alerted the two adult residents, who were able to escape without injury. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries during the response. Both were transported to a local hospital, treated, and later released.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
