Carter County Mayor Patty Woodby joins her community in mourning the passing of former Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford, who passed away at the age of 67.
“Sheriff Lunceford was more than just a public servant – he was a pillar of our community,” Woodby said. “He dedicated his life to the well-being and safety of the people of Carter County and our region. His legacy of service lives on.”
A native of the Fish Springs community in Carter County, Lunceford served two terms as sheriff from 2014-2022. He brought 30 years of law enforcement experience to the position, having worked at the Carter County Sheriff’s Office, Johnson City Police Department and Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP). He spent the majority of his career with the THP before retiring in August 2012. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, having served active duty from 1976-1979.
“Carter County has lost a true leader and friend,” Woodby said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”
