“We did two things well in this game,” Lady ’Landers head coach Matt Birchfield said. “We held them down scoring, and we made free throws. We made 16 of 21 from the line, and you have to make free throws and hit layups if you want to win.”

Blair connected on 8 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter as Volunteer looked to make a late run, with post Emilee Mailloux getting hot down low. Mailloux scored a game-high 19 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter.

Cloudland (1-2) took a 13-9 lead after the first period, with Blair scoring six points and post Abby Clawson adding four of her nine points in the opening stanza. The Lady ’Landers extended their advantage to 27-13 at halftime, with Makinna Shell scoring eight of her 13 points in the first half.

“Abby did some good work in the post,” Birchfield said. “She got a couple of buckets and rebounds. We took care of the ball for the most part.”

The third quarter was mostly a defensive battle, with Cloudland outscoring the Lady Falcons 9-8 to take a 32-21 lead into the fourth period. Volunteer cut the Cloudland lead to 40-32 at the 4:09 mark of the fourth, with Mailloux leading the charge.

Blair’s two free throws stemmed the tide, but Mailloux hit a pair from the line to keep it an eight-point Lady ’Landers lead. With the score 47-37, the Lady ’Landers hit their last six free throws, with Street, Layken Blair, and Regan Blair each knocking down two shots.
