On Wednesday at Hampton Elementary, the Bulldogs dismantled Cornerstone Christian Academy (Va.) by 30 points, and the Lady Bulldogs staved off a potential comeback from the Lady Vikings.
The Lady Bulldogs built a 15-point lead with a 15-1 second-to-third-period run, but Tennessee High battled to cut the lead to four points in the fourth quarter before Hampton ultimately prevailed 56-51. Senior guard Piper Helle scored a team-high 13 points and ran the Bulldogs’ offense to near perfection.
“We tried to win as many 50-50 balls as we could,” Helle said. “It’s a great way to start the season and my senior year. Defensively, we want to force turnovers.”
The Vikings took a 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Bulldogs turned up the heat defensively and shut down the Vikings, outscoring them 17-7 to take a 30-23 halftime lead. Junior Hannah Smith knocked down a pair of treys, and Helle added a triple in the period.
“We didn’t flinch when they made a run on us,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Dewayne Humphrey said. “Our kids have been resilient, work hard, and we have a young team, but they don’t flinch. We let them get on top of us against our press, and they made some big shots, but we didn’t flinch, and we closed out strong.”
In the third period, Hampton outscored the Vikings 12-6, holding the Vikings to 3-of-10 shooting from the floor and allowing THS just 13 points in the second and third quarters combined.
“Helle ran the show, and she filled up the stat sheet,” Humphrey said. “And Faye Carrico boxed out and got a lot of rebounds, which was big. She had to keep Jones off the boards, and she did a good job of that.”
Carrico hit a deuce to open the fourth quarter, but THS went on a seven-point run to cut the Hampton lead to eight at 44-36. Smith hit a big bucket to make it a 10-point Bulldogs lead. Once again, the Vikings fought back with a six-point run to make it a 46-42 game.
Helle ended that run with a trey, and the game went back and forth the rest of the way, with Helle ending the contest with a pair of free throws.

This game was no contest from the start, as the Bulldogs opened a 31-20 first-period lead and simply built on that lead the rest of the way. Chase Davenport scored a game-high 19 points, hitting three treys, including two of his first shots of the night.
“We got a lot of kids minutes, and it was good to get the jitters out,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “We forced 19 turnovers, played good defense, got five steals from Jayden Nave, and Bryce Fagan had 11 rebounds. Nave had nine. We scored in bunches, and Chase came out on fire in the first quarter.”
Hampton led 54-29 at halftime and allowed the Lions just nine second-half points, running away with this one. Fagan scored 18 points, and Tuff Robinson added 15 points along with seven boards.
Evan Denton had a team-high 16 points for the Lions, with Drew Roop adding 10.
