The annual Veterans Day Ceremony was held Monday at the Elizabethton War Memorial Walk of Honor, where the community gathered to remember the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces in wars past and present.

The origins of the federal holiday trace back to World War I, when all sides declared a truce, marking the end of hostilities at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918 – the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Over a century later, the holiday is still celebrated on Nov. 11, honoring those who have served in all U.S. wars.

During his prayer, retired Pastor Ray Amos asked for blessings on those who served and acknowledged the freedom they provided, including the right to vote, as recently exercised by citizens.

Many veterans attended the ceremony, wearing hats and jackets representing the wars in which they served.

Members of the local War Memorial Oversight Committee participated, while members of the Elizabethton High School United States Navy National Defense Cadet Corps raised new service flags, as well as an American and POW flag donated by Tennessee State Senator Rusty Crowe.

Loretta Bowers performed the National Anthem, and Jon Shell provided a patriotic musical presentation on the bagpipes, including “Amazing Grace.”
