November 10, 1928 – October 30, 2024

Nathaniel Curtis “Nat” Payne passed away peacefully on the morning of October 30, 2024, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital after a brief illness. His caregiver and friend, Barbara Hyder, was by his side.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Aida Gouge Payne.

Mr. Payne was retired with 20 years of service as a Technical Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force, serving in both the Korean and Vietnam era. He also retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church in Elizabethton and attended faithfully until his health would not allow.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rita “Mattie” Grindstaff Payne; his brothers, Joseph and Vernon Payne; and his sisters, Mary Hart, Doris Chancey and Norma Braddock.

He is survived by a brother-in-law, Anthony Grindstaff and wife Betty; several nieces and nephews; his church family; a host of loving friends and neighbors; his Chick-fil-A kids that meant so much to him; and his loving caregivers, Jerry and Barbara Hyder.

He was laid to rest at the Mountain Home VA. It was his wish that there be no services. Please do something kind for someone else in his memory.

Memorial Funeral Chapel was in charge.
