Mike Barwick, 78, of Carter County, passed away earlier this week at his home following a long illness.
Mike was born in Pueblo, Colo., on September 23, 1946 and was the son of the late John Freeman Barwick and Elizabeth Clark Barwick, both of Washington County.
Mike moved to East Tennessee when he was nine and attended the local public schools and University High. In 1968 he completed his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from ETSU followed by an MD from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1972. Following medical school, Mike spent 22 years on active duty in the Armed Forces as an orthopedic surgeon. He served with the 28th Combat Support Hospital in Operation Desert Storm in 1990. He retired from the Army in 1993 as a colonel and returned to East Tennessee where he practiced medicine until his retirement.
Mike loved military history. He was an artist and an accomplished woodworker.
He is survived by brothers and sisters, John, Ronald, Wayne, Maryanne and Sarah; by daughters, Susan and Elizabeth; and by his grandson and great-grandson, Cameron and David.
The Barwick family will have a memorial service Wednesday, November 13, at 3 p.m. at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A reception and receiving of friends will follow the service at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family via www.morrisbaker.com.
