Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department honored at 2024 TRPA Conference with multiple awards

MURFREESBORO – The Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department proudly attended the 2024 Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association (TRPA) Conference from Monday, Nov. 4 to Thursday, Nov. 7, in Murfreesboro, where they were recognized with multiple prestigious awards. The annual conference brings together Parks and Recreation professionals from across the state, emphasizing networking, skill development, and commitment to enhancing local parks and programs.

During the Sneaker Ball Awards Banquet, Assistant Director and former Maintenance Supervisor Garrett Johnson was honored with the statewide Wayne Hansard Award. The award recognizes individuals who exhibit outstanding dedication and excellence in maintaining parks, facilities, and grounds. Johnson’s achievement reflects his commitment to the quality and accessibility of Elizabethton’s public spaces.

The department also celebrated Assistant Director Kelly Kitchens, who received her Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) pin during the event. The CPRP certification, a nationally recognized credential, represents a high standard of expertise in parks and recreation. Kitchens’ achievement underscores her dedication to ensuring Elizabethton’s parks and programs maintain top levels of service, safety, and community enrichment.

In addition, the department received the inaugural “Step Ahead Award,” a perpetual trophy given annually to the city that submits its award entries to TRPA ahead of all others. The Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department’s proactive approach and commitment to excellence were highlighted by this recognition, showcasing the hard work and dedication of its staff.

TRPA, founded in 1952, is a non-profit professional society of over 2,100 individual and agency members committed to supporting effective professionals in achieving healthy, livable communities. The organization continues to educate on the most current methods and programs available, advocates for parks and recreation funding and positive legislation at various governmental levels, and communicates through social forums, in-person events, print and online publications, and virtual meetings.

These honors at the 2024 TRPA Conference underscore the department’s continued commitment to enhancing the quality of life for the Elizabethton community.
