JOHNSON CITY – Big plays were the order of the day for Happy Valley on Friday night at William B. Greene Stadium on the campus of ETSU as the Warriors forged a 46-0 victory over Unaka in the doubleheader called the Clash for Compassion.
Senior running back/defensive back Jamie Esterline scored touchdowns on the first two plays of the game with a 65-yard run and a 37-yard interception return to stake HV (6-1 overall, 3-1 conference) to a 13-0 lead in less than a minute of clock time.
“Jamie is a senior, and he is a very versatile player,” Warriors head coach Jason Jarrett said. “Defensively, he has played three or four different positions all year, and offensively, we move him around. Anytime he touches the ball, he has a chance to go the distance.”
Esterline finished with 89 rushing yards on two carries and had a 28-yard touchdown reception from Gabe McDougald as well.
On the Rangers’ second possession, the Warriors forced a fumble, and linebacker Mason Norman had a scoop and score for the second week in a row. Norman’s score made it a 20-0 HV lead just two minutes into the contest.
Norman later added an interception that HV turned into points as fullback Tyler Berry capped a four-play, 46-yard drive with a 30-yard touchdown run for a 26-0 Warriors advantage. Still in the first quarter, the Rangers were forced to punt, and junior Tyler Bailey scored on a 12-yard run for a 33-0 HV lead.
For the contest, the Warriors’ defense held Unaka to 95 yards of total offense. Jarrett said of that effort, “As I said before, Happy Valley is synonymous with great defense. We have had five defensive touchdowns in the last two games, and we have given up just 58 points all season.”
In the second quarter, Esterline scored his third touchdown of the game on a 28-yard catch from McDougald to stretch the HV lead to 40-0. Unaka put together a mini-drive that stalled at the HV 32-yard line, and the Warriors capitalized with a 39-yard scoring run from Berry to make it a 46-0 contest.
The second half was played with a running clock and was scoreless as HV played mostly backup players. The Warriors finish the 2024 regular season next Friday with a conference clash against West Greene, while Unaka finishes a disappointing season with a home game against Cloudland on Nov. 1.
For Unaka, quarterback Connor McKinney completed eight of 18 passes for 80 yards. Brynin Repass caught four passes for 41 yards, and Draedyn Freeman caught three passes for 33 yards.
