FEMA assistance available to Carter, six other counties’ residents

Renters and homeowners in Carter County who had uninsured damage or losses caused by Tropical Storm Helene may be eligible for Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) disaster assistance, according to the agency.
FEMA may be able to help with serious needs, displacement, temporary lodging, basic home repair costs, personal property loss or other disaster-caused needs. In addition to Carter, homeowners and renters in Cocke, Greene, Hamblen, Hawkins, Johnson, Unicoi, and Washington counties can apply.
You can apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov, download the FEMA App using your iPhone or Android smartphone, or call the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362. The telephone line is open every day and help is available in most languages. If you use a relay service such as Video Relay Service, captioned telephone or other service, give FEMA your number for that service.

FEMA’s disaster assistance offers new benefits that provide flexible funding directly to survivors. In addition, a simplified process and expanded eligibility allows Tennesseans access to a wider range of assistance and funds for serious needs.
What You’ll Need When You Apply
— A current phone number where you can be contacted.
— Your address at the time of the disaster and the address where you are now staying.
— Your Social Security number.
— A general list of damage and losses.
— Banking information, if you choose direct deposit.
— If insured, the policy number or the agent and/or the company name.
If you have homeowners, renters or flood insurance, you should file a claim as soon as possible. FEMA cannot duplicate benefits for losses covered by insurance. If your policy does not cover all your disaster expenses, you may be eligible for federal assistance.

By law, FEMA cannot duplicate benefits you receive from another source. However, there are many different types of assistance available through FEMA and the agency reviews each application to ensure an individual receives the aid for which you are eligible.
If money is received from a GoFundMe page for a specific disaster-related expense — such as home repairs, funeral expenses, or other emergency needs — you may not be able to receive FEMA aid for the same expenses. For example, if you receive donations to clean up storm damage to your home, FEMA may not be able to also grant you financial assistance for home clean up. FEMA encourages all survivors to apply for assistance regardless so we can review your specific case.
