Edith Carol Smalling, 85, Watauga, went home to be with the Lord on October 2, 2024. She was the daughter of the late Roby and Mary Hamilton Watts. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frankie Dale Smalling, daughter, Lesia Carol Smalling, and brother, John Watts.

Edith was a member of New Hope Church of Christ. She was a founding member and lifetime member of the Watauga Volunteer Fire Department. She had previously served as the Mayor of Watauga and Commissioner of Watauga.

Survivors include Michelle Humphrey (Paul); four grandchildren, Tabitha Michelle Arnold, Lance Christopher Simerly, Travis Dale Simerly and Dakota Humphrey; two great-grandchildren, Aleigha Arnold and Torren Simerly; and several nieces and nephews.

A service will be held at Memorial Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, October 8, at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Peer officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., prior to the service. A graveside service will be held at Monte Vista Memorial Park on Wednesday, October 9, at 2 p.m. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:40 p.m. along with the active pallbearers: Paul Humphrey, Lance Simerly, William Pippin, Benny Colbaugh, Craig Odom and Nathan Ward.
