Carter County continues to receive critical aid through ongoing Blackhawk helicopter supply drops, according to Mayor Patty Woodby. Several Blackhawk helicopters have been deployed in the region to deliver essential supplies to remote communities, including Elk Mills, Poga, and areas near Bob Trivett’s residence.
The deliveries, coordinated by the National Guard, have provided generators, water, food, gasoline, and essential items like diapers and feminine hygiene products. “Without the National Guard being here with boots on the ground and in the air, I don’t know where we’d be,” said Mayor Woodby.
The National Guard is currently running nearly seven Blackhawk helicopters out of the Elizabethton Airport, with aircraft rotating through Carter County every 20 minutes. These helicopters have made supply drops not only in Elk Mills and Poga but also in other affected areas such as Roan Mountain, Cloudland High School football field, Happy Valley High School, and Roan Mountain State Park.
“Even though some areas are accessible by highway, the Blackhawks are faster, more efficient, and able to carry substantial amounts of supplies,” Mayor Woodby added.
The ongoing efforts highlight the immense support Carter County has received during this challenging time, and local officials remain focused on providing relief to residents in need.
