Freshman Vella Nave scored a three-goal hat trick on Tuesday evening at Sullivan East as the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones closed out the 2024 regular season with a 4-0 victory. The game itself was a physically rough match, with the Cyclones receiving six yellow cards.

“It was a physical match for sure,” Nave said. “I don’t think it was dirty, but it was rough. I don’t think they were all yellow cards, maybe just a foul. It was a good game and not dirty at all.”

The first half was scoreless for a long period, with East having the only good chance at a goal early on, as Emma Nagel had a free kick from 12 yards out that she put into the side of the net. In the 33rd minute, Nave scored with an assist from sophomore Maddux Morton.

Nave struck again in the 34th minute, converting a crossing pass from junior Izzy Lewis to make it a 2-0 match at the halftime break.

“At the end of the day, it comes down to how well you adjust to the situation,” Lady Cyclones head coach Lauren Meier said. “This was not our best game of the season, but we were able to get it together.”

In the second half, Lewis was fouled in the penalty area on a potential breakaway when she was tackled and went down face-first. She converted her penalty kick, and the Cyclones held a 3-0 advantage.

In the last minute of the match, Nave scored her third goal, beating Lady Patriots goalkeeper Cheyenne Peaks with a low shot to her left.

“I ran down and at first I hesitated, but then just popped it right into the right corner,” Nave said of her third goal.

The Patriots proved capable defensively and had several scoring chances thwarted by Cyclone keeper Abbie Krawcyzk and the EHS backline. The Patriots had eight free-kick chances, with four of those coming within scoring range, but Krawcyzk was able to handle them with the help of an aggressive defense.

“This was probably a more physical game than others we have played, but in the end, we have to adjust our style of play to how the game is being called,” Meier said. “At times, we were able to do that, and other times we were not.”
