District Attorney General Steven Finney has warned of criminal activity in the aftermath of the weekend flood.

“I am deeply troubled to learn of looting activity which has reportedly occurred. I want to assure the people of the First Judicial District that my office will aggressively prosecute any person charged with looting, theft, or any other crime related to this disaster to the fullest extent possible. This will not be tolerated. This office will do everything in its power to protect those who have been affected. Any applicable enhancements to criminal offenses which occur that are related to this disaster will also be pursued,” Finney said.

He continued: “Furthermore, I would like to point out that Tennessee has laws which address issues such as price gouging in the aftermath of natural disasters. This is to ensure that essential supplies such as food, fuel, and water are available to consumers and remain affordable and available. Any suspected price gouging activity should be reported to the State of Tennessee at the Division of Consumer Affairs.”

DA Finney said he was encouraged to see the volunteer efforts and the efforts of all first responders which are coming together to rebuild our communities. “This is a difficult time for everyone. The thoughts and prayers of myself and my staff are with those affected,” he concluded.
