Four local school board members were recognized Monday night at the Tennessee School Boards Association’s (TSBA) Northeast Fall District Meeting held at Chuckey-Doak High School in Greene County. Honorees included Elizabethton City School Board members Eddie Pless (Board Chair), Jamie Bass Schaff (Vice Chair), and Danny O’Quinn, along with Carter County School Board member Dylan Hill.
“TSBA’s Fall District Meetings provide our staff the opportunity to speak with our members and listen to their concerns on multiple topics. This allows us to advocate effectively on their behalf while providing them with information they need to make informed decisions for the students in their community,” said TSBA Executive Director Dr. Tammy Grissom.
During the meeting, local board members and superintendents participated in a survey, sharing their opinions on issues ahead of the upcoming General Assembly. Topics discussed included Tennessee Investment in Student Achievement (TISA), third-grade proficiency, school letter grades, artificial intelligence in public schools, Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) student eligibility, teacher shortages, and Tennessee’s retirement-eligible teachers.
Several Northeast District school board members also received TSBA Boardsmanship Awards for 2024. These awards honor individual board members who have met one of five levels of boardsmanship standards in the past year. The program recognizes school board members for their dedication to professional development and participation in board activities beyond the local level. Awards for Levels I-IV are presented at Fall District Meetings, while Level V is awarded at the annual convention in November.
The TSBA’s Boardsmanship program celebrates not only the quantity of involvement but also the quality of participation in workshops, training, and other board-related activities.
