JONESBOROUGH – In the early portion of the girls’ soccer match between Elizabethton and David Crockett, the Lady Pioneers got off to a flying start.
The Pioneers scored two early goals and made them stand up in a 2-1 win over the Lady Cyclones.
In the eighth minute, a mistake in the Lady Cyclones’ midfield allowed a breakaway by Kortney Shaffer, who drove to the EHS penalty area and put a crossing pass on the foot of Emma Annett, who finished with a shot past Abbie Krawczyk for a 1-0 Crockett advantage.
In the 18th minute, the Pioneers got a goal off a beautiful set piece when Kourtney Aloiso sent a corner kick high to the back post, where Annett headed the ball into the net to stake Crockett to a two-goal lead.
The Cyclones (3-3 conference) got a goal back in the 23rd minute when junior Camdyn Garland scored on a high-arching shot over the fingertips of Pioneers goalkeeper Alli Orren, making it a 2-1 match.
Early in the second half, lightning and drenching rain halted the action for 45 minutes.
“They shut us down defensively in the second half,” Lady Cyclones head coach Lauren Meier said. “We had some chances but didn’t take advantage of them. We still have two conference games left and a non-conference match with Volunteer, and we have to take advantage of the two conference games, especially.”
With the win, Crockett finishes 5-3 in the conference, which means the Cyclones must win their games with Unicoi County (at home) and on the road against Sullivan East. If EHS wins those, tie-breakers will go into effect.
“We have a coaches’ meeting coming up where we will decide tie-breakers,” Meier said. “We are tied with Crockett in wins and goals, so I think it will come down to aggregate goals in our region. We hoped a win here would give us some wiggle room, but it is what it is.”
