MORRISTOWN – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Morristown has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for portions of southwest North Carolina, east Tennessee, and southwest Virginia. A Flood Watch is currently in effect, with the risk of flash flooding due to scattered showers and thunderstorms.
Rain is expected to become more widespread this afternoon, with isolated flash flooding possible through tonight as thunderstorms move over increasingly saturated soils. A low risk of strong winds and a nonzero risk of a tornado exists from this morning through early afternoon.
Looking ahead, Tropical Storm Helene is expected to impact the Tennessee Valley and Southern Appalachians later this week. Moderate to heavy rainfall is anticipated Thursday, with several inches of rain expected today and Thursday before Helene’s arrival.
From late Thursday through Friday, the storm will likely bring heavy rain and strong winds, particularly in higher elevations. A High Wind Watch is in effect from Thursday evening through Friday evening, with gusts up to 50 mph possible in lower elevations and up to 70 mph in the higher terrain.
Residents are advised to prepare for possible power outages and difficult travel conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles. Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates.
