Hampton needed a win badly last Friday in Conference 1-2A against Cumberland Gap, and two players who stood out in that contest were senior running back Dominique Burleson and freshman Kaden Jones.

Jones rushed for 121 yards on just four carries, with touchdown runs of 27 and 71 yards, earning praise from Bulldogs head coach Michael Lunsford. “Jones ran real well tonight,” Lunsford said. “We are looking forward to getting him more involved. We really haven’t had a chance to see what we can and can’t do.”

Jones opened the scoring with a 27-yard run to give Hampton a quick 8-0 lead, with Burleson adding the two-point conversion.

“The front line did a good job in practice this week,” Burleson said. “We wanted to protect the quarterback and get a run game going. We practiced running up the middle, and we kept doing that all game. We have the mindset that we know we can win if we keep playing hard.”

It was Burleson who scored the next two rushing touchdowns for the Bulldogs, first with a one-yard run and later with a 65-yard blast up the middle. In all, Burleson rushed for 180 yards on eight carries.

In the second quarter, Burleson scored the sixth touchdown of the night for Hampton, who scored on the first six possessions of the contest. This one was good for 41 yards.

In the third quarter, Jones took a toss from quarterback Maddux Wilson and ran 71 yards to pay dirt to continue Hampton’s scoring barrage.

“I was looking to give Burleson a little bit of a break,” Lunsford said of using many backs in the game.
