The Hampton and Unaka golf teams took advantage of a beautiful day at Elizabethton Golf Course, using the opportunity to fine-tune their game before district play on Friday at The Crossings in Jonesborough. Hampton Head Coach Justin Lyons explained that the format was match play, which tends to be more relaxed and allows players to focus on improving specific aspects of their game.

“Regular play emphasizes scoring low, but in match play, you win the hole and move on,” Lyons said. “No attacking, just relax and work on your game. This mindset of playing the hole and moving on should help them achieve a good mental approach for Friday.”

During match play, Hampton defeated Johnson County after a playoff, while South Greene beat Unaka 4-0. New Unaka girls coach Chandler Thomas said this final match before district play will benefit her players.

“We are taking our time, using our confidence clubs, and applying a strong mental approach while cleaning up our short game,” Thomas said.

Unaka golfer and Milligan University commit Mason Wilson understands the importance of the district tournament.

“I want to play smart—hopefully smart enough to advance to regions. Today, I’m working on just keeping the tee ball in play to increase my chances of attacking the greens,” Wilson said.
