The 1-2A conference girls’ soccer match between Elizabethton and Sullivan East came to an early end at the half when Lady Patriots midfielder Paisley Patrick suffered a broken right leg in a collision with Lady Cyclones goalkeeper Abbie Krawcyzk.

The play occurred as time ran out in the first half. Patrick pounced on a loose ball in the Cyclones’ penalty area and drove toward the ball as Krawcyzk dove forward to block the shot.

Patrick flipped head over heels in the collision and lay on the field for quite some time as trainer Justin Smith, her parents, and others tended to her until paramedics arrived. The situation escalated when Sullivan East parents reportedly told Lady Patriots head coach Michael Husbands to pull his players from the field, expressing concerns that officials had lost control of the match.

“It was 100 percent not Abbie’s fault,” Lady Cyclones head coach Lauren Meier said. “It was no cheap shot, just two players making an aggressive play. Both teams played physical, but there were no cheap shots taken.”

Despite Coach Meier’s protests, Krawcyzk was shown a red card, meaning she was ejected from the game and will have to sit out the next two EHS matches. Husbands then led his team off the field, and the match was halted with EHS (6-3, 3-1 conference) holding a 5-0 advantage.

However, the incident did not overshadow Senior Night, during which the four Cyclone seniors — Lily Baker, Aubrey Meier, Savannah Smith, and Hallie Powell — were honored.

EHS got on the scoreboard in the 14th minute on a shot from freshman Vella Nave, who fired the ball into the East net past goalkeeper Cheyenne Peaks for a 1-0 lead. In the 26th minute, the Cyclones pulled off an end-to-end rush with Lewis flying down the home sideline. Ten feet from the end line, she sent a crossing pass to Nave, who finished the play with her second goal of the match.

“It was a beautiful play,” Meier said. “It’s great when you see a result like that from a good play. We really passed the ball well tonight.”

In the 35th minute, Powell fired a shot from an angle that snuck past Peaks for a 3-0 Cyclone advantage. Lewis scored on a left-footed shot in the 37th minute and capped off the scoring by dropping a floating shot off a free kick from outside the penalty area that sailed high into the Patriots’ goal.
