The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office recently hosted the Second Annual Cops In Court training seminar for law enforcement agencies in the region. The interactive seminar was offered to officers to educate them in preparing cases for trials and sponsored by the Tennessee Safety Department and Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference. Participants received training concerning report writing, courtroom preparation, testimony, and direct and cross examinations. This interactive training consisted of mock trials in which the officer was given the scenario of a crime and give his or her testimony on direct and cross examinations.
Assistant District Attorney Murphy Mullins led the seminar and and was assisted by Assistant District Attorneys Will Freemon, Will Monk, Levi Haynes, and Darcee Kubisiak, all who serve the Judicial District, along with Terry Wood of the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference.
The Jonesborough Police Department, Elizabethton Police Department, Carter County Sheriff’s Department, Johnson County Sheriff’s Department, Town of Unicoi, East Tennessee State University Public Safety, and Knoxville Police Department were agencies that participated.
“This training is a wealth of knowledge for officers, young officers who are fresh out of the academy, or have not yet been called to testify in court proceedings. The materials covered provide tools for officers to use on the scene when writing their report, and giving testimony to the facts of their case. I am grateful that we can provide this training to area law enforcement and for their participation,” said Steve Finney, District Attorney.
