Three arrested in connection to fatal Johnson City shooting

JOHNSON CITY – The Johnson City Police Department, with assistance from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Greene County Sheriff’s Office, and Asheville Police Department, has arrested three suspects in connection with a fatal weekend shooting.

On Sunday, Sept. 8, at approximately 2 a.m., Johnson City police officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 200 block of East Main Street (Majestic Park). Investigators found two victims with gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Charles Dabney, 18, of Greeneville, died from his injuries. The second victim was treated and released.

On the evening of Sept. 10, Johnson City police charged Tyron Bland, 34, of Greene County, with aggravated assault, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and reckless endangerment. Bland was arrested at a residence on Blue Springs Road in Greene County and transported to the Washington County Detention Center.

On the afternoon of Sept. 11, Jayden Smith, 19, of Asheville, N.C., was arrested in Asheville. He is charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment and is awaiting extradition.

Katy Scruggs, 22, of Asheville, was also arrested and charged with accessory after the fact. She was with Smith in Asheville and is also awaiting extradition.

The investigation is ongoing, and more charges are pending.
