Umoja Festival brings celebration of culture and community to JC

The Umoja Festival, a celebration of unity and diversity, is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 14, at King Commons Park in Johnson City. This year’s festival will feature a parade, a bilingual health fair, and an exciting lineup of live music and entertainment, creating a vibrant experience for all attendees.
“We are excited to invite the community to join us for the Umoja Festival, where we come together to celebrate diverse cultures and promote unity,” said Joe Bradley, Umoja Co-chair. “This year’s festival has a mix of music, entertainment, and family-friendly activities that represent the spirit of our community.”
Festival Highlights Include:
– Parade: Starting at 11 a.m., the parade will travel from Carver Recreation Center to King Commons Park. The parade will feature car and motorcycle clubs, dance groups, local sports teams, and local election officers.
– Opening Ceremony: The festival will kick off at noon with the calling of the drums and welcoming words from board members.
– Bilingual Health Fair: Attend the bilingual health fair for free access to valuable health information and services in English, Spanish, Swahili, and other languages.
– Live Music Lineup: Enjoy a range of performances, including a Gospel Fest, local favorite Ishmael Nehemiah, saxophonist Rhoda G, Wild Bodema Drummers, and bands M’Soul and The Company Band.
– Children’s Activities: Kids can enjoy the park area, face painting, free craft activities, inflatables, and train rides around the festival.
– Local Vendors and Nonprofits: Explore a variety of food and merchandise vendors like Ma’ Doris African Kitchen, Lakeo Steakhouse of Japan, Sunny Beauty Supply, and 4Hers Collection. Get information and resources from local nonprofit organizations like CASA, League of Women – Special Entertainment: Experience the excitement of stilt walkers, traditional African drummers, and Mexican Folklore dancers, adding flair and rhythm to the festival.
The Umoja Festival will run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at King Commons Park, located at 112 N. Commerce St. in Johnson City. Admission to the festival is free, and all are welcome to join in the celebration.
The Umoja Festival is an annual event celebrating unity, diversity, and culture in East Tennessee. For over 25 years, the festival has aimed to bring the community together through cultural displays, live music, and family-friendly activities.
