Dayton Richard Jones, 79, of Newland, N.C., went home to be with his Lord, who he faithfully served preaching the word for many years, on Monday morning, September 9, 2024, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine, N.C. He was born March 28, 1945 to the late Dayton Jones and Oda McGuire Jones. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his son, Scott Jones; sisters, Mary Alice Parlier, Evelyn McCurry, Rachel Jones, Geniva Henson, Della Ingram and Willa Bunting; and brothers, Michael Jones and Sherrill Jones.
Above all things, Richard was a great man of God. He was a member of Meadowview Baptist Church where he served as pastor for 57 years. He also preached all over Tennessee and North Carolina and sometimes preached over 40 revivals in a year’s time. Richard loved people, especially kids, and never met a stranger. He enjoyed spending time in God’s creation hunting and fishing.
Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife of 62 years, Alma Jones; daughter, Kim Jones; son, Rick Jones and wife Tammy; grandchildren, Courtney Mull and husband Kenneth, Ben Jones and Isaiah Jones; great-grandchildren, Remington and Anna; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, September 14, at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Ray Greene officiating.The graveside service and interment will follow at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery (12021 US-19E, Spruce Pine, NC 28777). Pallbearers will be Isaiah Jones, Ben Jones, Kenneth Mull, J.R. Bunton, Bob Ward, Lowell Trivette and Marshall Estep. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Meadowview Baptist Church c/o Brenda Ward, 148 Malcolm Fritts Lane, Mountain City, TN 37683.
